United to introduce economy seat row that converts into couch on long-haul flights from 2027

Airline says new three-seat “Relax Row” will be installed on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft by 2030, targeting families, couples and solo travellers seeking more space in economy
United Airlines plans to introduce a new long-haul economy seating option from 2027 that will allow a row of three seats to convert into a couch-style space after take-off.
The airline said the product, called United Relax Row, would be rolled out on more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft by 2030, with up to 12 such sections on each plane. The rows will be positioned between standard economy and United Premium Plus.
United said the new design uses individually adjustable leg rests that fold up to create what it described as a flatter, mattress-like area for passengers to sleep, stretch out or watch films more comfortably on international flights.
Customers booking the row would receive additional amenities including a custom-fitted mattress pad, specially sized blankets and extra pillows. Families travelling with children will also be offered a plush toy and a children’s travel kit, the carrier said.
The launch gives United a new premium-style upsell within economy as airlines continue to look for ways to extract more value from long-haul cabins without moving passengers into a higher class of service.
Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, said: “As a leading premium airline, we’re committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers – and the United Relax Row is the perfect example of that. Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them.
“United is the only North American airline offering a product like the United Relax Row and is one of the many reasons why we’re continuing to win brand loyal customers.”
United said it would be the first North American airline to offer this type of seating and that it holds North American exclusivity on the design.
The airline positioned the new row as particularly suited to families with small children, couples and solo travellers wanting more space while staying in the economy cabin.
