The European expands its international distribution through The Content Exchange as part of a wider strategy to grow editorial output, build new publishing partnerships and broaden its network of specialist correspondents
The European has joined the global syndication platform The Content Exchange as part of a wider editorial and digital development programme.
The partnership will allow The European to both distribute its journalism to other publishers and access articles from TCE’s international network of contributors and media organisations.
TCE operates what it describes as a “public CMS”, enabling publishers, broadcasters and digital platforms to licence and exchange content directly.
The platform hosts more than 2.9million articles, images, podcasts and other media assets, and counts over 135 publishers among its contributors, including major groups such as Future plc and The Independent.
The European’s integration with the platform forms part of a broader set of changes underway at the title since Jon Kirk took over editorial leadership last year.
These include the launch of the European Digital Content Exchange Network, a separate initiative created by Kirk to allow participating publishers and contributors to share journalism with one another without syndication fees.
The network, which already includes NewsX News Agency and a number of other publishing partners, is continuing to expand as additional outlets come on board.
In recent months the publication has also brought on dozens of specialist correspondents covering areas such as technology, policy, leadership and emerging markets.
He has also appointed Stanley Johnson, the father of former UK prime minister Boris Johnson, as editor-at-large. Johnson, a long-standing environmental campaigner, author and former official at the European Commission, will contribute commentary and features on international affairs, environmental policy and global travel.
The magazine has also been strengthening relationships with governments and institutions across the Middle East and Africa, reflecting its growing focus on international policy, investment and energy developments.
The ties form part of Kirk’s aim to deepen engagement with policymakers and regional stakeholders as the title expands its global editorial reach.
According to the publisher, the changes have been accompanied by a sharp rise in editorial output, website visitor numbers, and print readership.
Speaking about the collaboration, TCE chief executive Joris van Lierop said the addition of The European strengthens the platform’s growing ecosystem of publishers and contributors.
The agreement enables The European to make selected articles available through the TCE marketplace while also drawing from the platform’s catalogue of syndicated material.
The partnership reflects a growing interest among publishers in collaborative distribution models as digital media organisations look for new ways to expand audiences without significantly increasing production costs.
“The European brings a strong international perspective on business, policy and global affairs,” van Lierop said. “We are pleased to welcome them to the network and look forward to helping expand the reach of their journalism across our platform.”

Kirk, a former Press Gazette Regional Reporter of the Year, said the move was intended to complement the magazine’s own content-sharing network as part of a gradual repositioning of the title’s digital operations.
“Our focus is on expanding the reach and volume of serious journalism while building new distribution partnerships,” he added. “Platforms such as The Content Exchange allow publishers to work together more effectively and ensure high-quality reporting travels further.”
