Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has launched its latest vessel, Norwegian Aqua
Her maiden voyage, now sailing from Lisbon, Portugal, to Southampton, UK, hosted more than 2,000 invited guests, including travel industry representatives and partners. The cruise line describes the journey as the first of a series of five introductory sailings scheduled across Europe and North America, culminating in an official christening event in Miami, USA, on 13 April.
Norwegian Aqua boasts a variety of new onboard experiences that include the ‘Aqua Slidecoaster’ – described by NCL as the world’s first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide at sea. The attraction offers passengers two different ride experiences, combining the speed and thrill of a rollercoaster with the twists and turns of a waterslide. The company claims it to be both the fastest and longest slide at sea to date.
Another significant addition aboard the ship is the ‘Glow Court’, a digital sports facility with an interactive LED floor. During the day, the space accommodates sporting events and games, adapting dynamically depending on the activities selected by passengers. At night, the same venue transforms into a nightclub space, providing an additional entertainment area on board.
The ship also premiered its entertainment, which included Revolution: A Celebration of Prince’ – a musical tribute show dedicated to the musician, Prince, offering an immersive concert experience featuring his most famous hits.
David Herrera, President of Norwegian Cruise Line, said: “This is a milestone moment for Norwegian Cruise Line as we set sail aboard Norwegian Aqua, a ship designed to offer our guests more: more wide-open space, more thrills, more culinary experiences, and more immersive entertainment.
“During this inaugural season, we look forward to welcoming our travel partners from around the world and to give them the exclusivity of being the first to experience our newest product and to fully understand how guests can ‘Experience More at Sea’ with us.”
Norwegian Aqua will set sail across the transatlantic journey next month. Upon arrival, she will be formally named in a christening ceremony. Emmy Award-winning actor Eric Stonestreet has been confirmed as the ship’s godfather.
He said: “Travelling the world to meet new people and explore new places is something I love to do, and after recently experiencing what Norwegian has to offer, I can attest that Norwegian truly makes it easy to do more of what I enjoy while on vacation.
“I am honoured to be named the godfather of Norwegian Aqua and to play my part in the journey of bringing this new ship to life. I am blown away by what’s in store for Norwegian Aqua and I cannot wait to take a ride on the Aqua Slidecoaster, indulge in some red curry at the all-new Sukhothai and most importantly create lifelong memories with my own family while on board this innovative new ship.”
Following the christening, Norwegian Aqua will be based across three primary US ports: Miami, Port Canaveral (Orlando), and New York City. The ship will operate voyages to various destinations in the Bahamas, Caribbean, and Bermuda, with itineraries planned through to March 2027.
Norwegian Cruise Line is a major operator within the global cruise industry, currently running a fleet of 20 ships sailing to over 450 destinations worldwide. The company is recognised for pioneering the concept of flexible cruising—particularly through innovations such as eliminating set dining times and formal dress codes.
