Edinburgh Airport launches £500m expansion as terminal footprint grows 60%

Scotland’s busiest airport will spend more than £500m over five years on new gates, aircraft stands and a major terminal expansion as it looks to support more international routes and passenger growth

Edinburgh Airport is to invest more than £500m over the next five years in the biggest capital spending programme in its history.

The first phase will expand the terminal footprint by 60 per cent, add new gates and aircraft stands and increase capacity across check-in, departures, international arrivals and baggage handling.

The airport says the programme is designed to support further long-haul and short-haul growth and strengthen connections between Scotland and markets across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.

Work is already under way on the South East Pier expansion, which is due to open fully in summer 2027.

The wider programme will also include new and improved shops, restaurants and bars, alongside changes intended to improve passenger flow through the terminal.

Beyond the terminal, Edinburgh Airport plans additional electric vehicle infrastructure, a new access road and other improvements across the wider airport campus.

Gordon Dewar, chief executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “This is the biggest investment in Edinburgh Airport’s history and comes at one of the most exciting points in its development, adding another important chapter to its story.

“Our growth has cemented our position as Scotland’s busiest and best connected airport, and we know the important role we play in supporting economic growth in Scotland and the UK. This investment will strengthen our international competitiveness by growing Scotland’s connectivity.

“This is the first phase of a multi-year plan that ensures we are building for Our Future, creating the capacity, capability and customer experience we need and want.

“It’s part of a wider vision that will see us invest in infrastructure, operations and sustainability, ensuring Edinburgh Airport continues to deliver for passengers, airlines, communities and the Scottish economy for decades to come.”

The investment is being backed by the airport’s owners, VINCI Airports and GIP, and forms the first phase of a longer-term development plan.

Balfour Beatty is involved in delivering infrastructure at the airport.

Nick Rowan, managing director of Balfour Beatty’s business in Scotland, said: “As Scotland’s busiest airport, Edinburgh Airport plays a vital role in supporting the country’s economy, international connectivity and future growth, and we are proud to be helping deliver the infrastructure needed for its next chapter.”

First Minister John Swinney visited the South East Pier development and said the investment would help the airport compete internationally.

He added: “This significant investment will enable Edinburgh Airport to compete with airports around the world. Alongside delivering real benefits to passengers, this boost will support Scotland’s international connections and help drive economic growth.

“Scotland is open for business and we want to maintain and strengthen Scotland’s position as the most attractive place in the UK for inward investment outside of London and the South East. Opportunities like this airport expansion will help make that happen.”
