Why Madeira is Europe’s ultimate island retreat

From dramatic volcanic landscapes and lush subtropical forests to bustling markets, stunning beaches, and vibrant traditions, Portugal’s balmy Atlantic outpost offers travellers year-round sun and authentic experiences wrapped in breathtaking natural beauty, finds John E. Kaye

With jaw-dropping scenery and world-class cuisine, there’s more to Madeira than Ronaldo and fortified wine, its two famous exports. The island of eternal spring may be tiny, but this subtropical paradise is known as the Pearl of the Atlantic for a reason.

Covering an area of just 740 square kilometres, Madeira is compact but extraordinarily diverse, offering everything from lush volcanic peaks and dense Laurissilva forests—recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site—to picturesque coastal villages and vibrant towns. Funchal, the bustling capital city, reflects Madeira’s colourful history with medieval churches, grand colonial buildings, and quaint cobbled streets, alongside cosmopolitan boutiques, bars, and restaurants.

Located approximately 600 kilometres west of Morocco and around 900 kilometres southwest of mainland Portugal, the island is a lively melting pot, reflecting centuries of maritime trade and migration. While distinctly Portuguese in language and governance, it displays notable influences from its proximity to North Africa, the Canary Islands, and continental Europe—especially in its cuisine, traditions, and festivities.

Famous for fortified Madeira wine – and as the birthplace of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo – the island embraces its traditions while welcoming modern innovation. And at just 57 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide, Madeira’s manageable size makes it ideal for exploring. Visitors can easily transition from coastal activities such as whale watching and sea kayaking to inland pursuits like hiking, mountain biking, or exploring rural vineyards and banana plantations.

Where to Stay

In recent years, Madeira has seen a rise in boutique hotels and unique accommodation options, so there’s no shortage of great places to stay. The Unique Boutique Stays Group offers carefully curated, distinctive properties ideal for those who value authenticity, comfort, and personal experiences. Properties include:

Sé Boutique Hotel
Situated in the heart of Funchal’s historic district, the 54-room Sé Boutique Hotel is just steps from Funchal Cathedral and local landmarks—making it an ideal base to experience the city’s lively streets, art galleries, markets, and historic sites. Villa Camélia Boutique House
Built in 1840 and lovingly restored by an art and antiques enthusiast, Villa Camélia Boutique House near Funchal blends rural elegance with historic luxury. The nine-room property, adorned with antique furnishings and curated artwork, provides a peaceful countryside setting. Guests can enjoy an outdoor pool, honesty bar, restaurant, and tranquil gardens.

Eating and Drinking in Madeira

Madeira’s food and drink reflect its maritime and agricultural heritage, combining Portuguese influences with unique island flavours. Seafood caught fresh from the Atlantic, exotic fruits, and locally produced wines are staples here. Signature dishes include espada (black scabbardfish), grilled limpets (lapas), espetada (marinated beef skewers), and the renowned fortified Madeira wine.

At Sé Boutique Hotel’s main restaurant, O Calhau, guests can enjoy authentic Madeiran and Mediterranean cuisine with dishes made using fresh, local ingredients. The recently renovated rooftop Flamingo Cocktail Bar—named one of Europe’s Top 10 Best Rooftops—offers 360° views over Funchal. It has become a local favourite for cocktails, live music, and spectacular sunsets, ideal for enjoying Madeira’s nightlife.

Activities and experiences

Guests staying at Unique Boutique Stays properties have access to a dedicated Guest Ambassador, offering personalised itineraries, local insights, and organised experiences such as guided levada hikes, island tours, whale and dolphin watching excursions, and culinary trails showcasing local delicacies.

Wellness and relaxation in Madeira

Madeira is famous as a wellness destination thanks to its mild climate, pure Atlantic air, and natural thermal waters. Visitors frequently seek the island’s spas, yoga retreats, and therapeutic landscapes for relaxation and rejuvenation. Guests at Sé Boutique Hotel can relax and rejuvenate at the hotel’s dedicated spa and wellness centre. Facilities include an indoor pool and a private massage room, where guests can enjoy bespoke treatments designed to soothe body and mind, using techniques inspired by Madeiran and Mediterranean traditions.

Getting around

Madeira is easily reached via Funchal’s (aptly named) Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, and well-connected by direct flights from the UK and continental Europe. On the island, reliable public transport and private tour operators make exploring easy, although renting a car offers maximum flexibility to discover hidden beaches, remote mountain villages, and scenic viewpoints.
