The European offers recognition to Latin America’s most progressive companies.
Although Asia has been in the spotlight over the last decade for its economic and geopolitical rise, it’s Latin America that shows all the signs of being the real success story of the 21st century. The region is leaving behind the days when foreign investors were scared off by a combination of political instability and corruption; these days markets look to this burgeoning economic power for prosperity and innovation.
The crisis in the northern hemisphere has led investors to explore uncharted territories, and Latin America has become extremely attractive with its young population, abundance of natural resources, interwoven cultures and strong links to Europe and the US. In 2012 the region attracted foreign direct investment of around $145bn, an impressive figure compared with the early days of economic growth in China. Estimates are that this will increase in the years to come as governments invest in education and healthcare, and regional companies become globally competitive in everything from manufacturing to alternative energy. There’s no doubt that Latin America has come a long way in the last 15 years, but you could argue, it’s only just getting started.
