G7 publish report on Gender Equality and the empowerment of girls and women

The G7 Gender Equality Advisory Council has released its report on Gender Equality and the empowerment of girls and women today.

The report was a call to arms on a global scale, identifying “79 legislative measures put in place by countries around the world, which support the achievement of gender equality and girls’ and women’s empowerment” and pushing for further attention and legislation on the following areas:

  • End gender-based violence;
  • Ensure equitable and quality education and health;
  • Promote economic empowerment;
  • Ensure full equality between women and men in public policies

The French presidency of the 2019 G7 summit made “fighting against inequality” their key focus area, in a time where the discrimination and inequality faced by girls and women is all too apparent. The report expresses that females are powerful agents of change, but that current attitudes towards them in all cultures causes them to miss out on their full potential. The report lists a number of methods states can adopt to help tackle the current discrimination faced by females, highlighting major steps taken by countries in the last few decades that have led the way in the fight against inequality.

This report comes days before the world leaders are due to meet for the main part of the event.
