Boris Johnson has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative party by fellow party members, and will take office as the Prime Minister of the UK on Wednesday 24th July.
The decision was announced today in London at the Queen Elizabeth II centre.
Johnson comfortably won the vote, beating rival Jeremy Hunt at 92, 153 votes to Hunt’s 46,656.
Speaking following the announcement he thanked his predecessor Theresa May and said: “We are going to energise the country.”
“We are going to get Brexit done on the 31st October and take advantage of all the opportunities it will bring with a new spirit of can do.”
The decision makes Mr Johnson the second consecutive Prime Minister to have taken office without going through a general election.
