It’s amazing the number of publications in different countries that say the same thing. Lisbon, Oporto and Algarve are great destinations to travel, to live or to invest. Here’s a tip, if you don’t know Portugal yet, come and discover only some of the advantages this country has to offer. You are going to feel welcome here.
One of Europe’s top-tier traditional destinations, Portugal never fails to surprise and delight the travellers who venture there. The striking landscapes, vintage architecture, sun-drenched coastlines and exquisite wines, make this country one of Europe’s most delightful getaways.
Explore and you’ll find stunning natural beauty at every turn. Taking up much of the western side of the Iberian Peninsula, the country boasts almost 1,800 km of coastline, with some of the most beautiful white sand beaches found anywhere in Europe. Head inland, and you’ll discover rolling plains and green valleys, along with enchanting mountainsides and endless hills. Portugal isn’t without its heritage either, with ancient towns and settlements scattered across the countryside, alongside cosmopolitan resorts and distinctly modern cities.
The country’s celebrated natural landscapes make it the perfect location for a whole host of sporting and leisure activities. The locals make full use of their impressive stretch of coastline, with surfing, sailing and bodyboarding all popular pastimes. The Serra da Estrela (Star Mountain Range) boasts the highest peaks and trails in the country, making it a favourite destination for trekking, mountain climbing and high-octane outdoor pursuits.
Portugal also enjoys convenient transport connections to the rest of the continent, with three international airports located in Lisbon, Faro and Oporto respectively. Visitors are only ever a few hours away from Europe’s biggest and most important cities by air, with excellent road and rail links connecting the country to the rest of the continent.
Diverse property market
Portugal has a thriving property market, with a diverse range of products available. If you’re looking to rent or to purchase, you’ll find a specialist market with a wide variety of property stock. From luxury villas to rural estates, homes with coastal views, luxury penthouses, vineyard properties and more; there’s no shortage of available property to fit individual investor needs.
Quality of life
Quality of life is second to none. With nearly 300 days of sunshine in the Algarve, the magnificent scenery of the coastline, Portugal is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities such as golf, surfing, horse riding and long walks by the sea.
The country also benefits from a quality education system: French High School Charles Lepierre, Little French School in Cascais, St. Julian (English school in Carcavelos), Oeiras International School, CAISL (American School in Sintra). Furthermore, three Portuguese universities appear in the QS Ranking of ‘the world’s best universities’: the University of Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto.
Tax benefits and Golden Visa Scheme
Portugal offers a very attractive tax regime for resident individuals, referred to as ‘non-habitual residents’. The regime provides for a flat income tax rate of 20% for qualifying employed and self-employed income streams and tax exemption for almost all foreign course income. In case of pensions, full tax exemption is granted, even if not taxed in the source country. In addition, the wider tax system is advantageous in relation to wealth, gift and inheritance taxes.
In 2012, Portugal introduced a unique residency-by-investment programme (the Golden Visa Scheme) whereby, through an asset investment in Portugal, individuals can obtain EU residency. Non-EU foreigners either have to purchase real estate for a value greater than 500,000 euros or invest in a business in Portugal for more than 1m euros.
The major benefits of the Golden Visa scheme are:
- Visa-free travel throughout the European Schengen area
- Possibility of residency for the whole family
- Application for citizenship after five-years if all requirements are met.
